Exploring the creative development on Tale of Two Cities: Hong Kong & Shanghai

Come to a perfect end of “Hong Kong: Creative Ecologies – Business, Living, Creativity” programme, Hong Kong Design Centre collaboratively held a forum with Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture on 17th October in The Bridge 8, Phase II, Lu Wan District, Shanghai which attracted hundreds of participants. Having the theme of “post-Expo development of two creative cities: Hong Kong & Shanghai” and referencing on cultural elites from two creative hubs in Europe, the forum aims at exploring Hong Kong and Shanghai’s creative direction in the coming future.

Ms. Kai-yin Lo, Chief Curator of the “Hong Kong: Creative Ecologies” exhibition and Mr. Danny Yung, Chairman of Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture and Curator of the exhibition led the guests from different cities, including Dr. Hans-Georg Knopp, Secretary-General of the Goethe-Institut; Mr. Jani joenniemi, Director of Culture programme, Finland at world expo 2010; Mr. Ossi Luoto, Executive producer of Creative Helsinki Promotion Limited; Mr. Freeman Lau, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Hong Kong Design Centre; Mr. Edwin Chan, Architect of Gehry Partner; Mr. Lee Chi-wing, Director of Milk Design Ltd. and Mr. Hong Ko, General Manager of Kan & Lau Design (Shenzhen)Co Ltd, to exchange their views and insights on the different designs of the Expo pavilions. From the creative development on Germany and Finland’s, guests shared their ideas about future development on architectural and product design in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Mr. Jani joenniemi, Director of Culture programme, Finland at world expo 2010 said: “Raising the quality of life can enhance city development, and design is a good way to enrich our quality of life. The Shanghai Expo 2010 provides a very good opportunity to the world’s cities to showcase their designs and creativeness, at the same time allowing decision makers absorb the experience from other countries, to enhance the city’s development.”

Ms. Kai-yin Lo, Chief Curator of the “Hong Kong: Creative Ecologies” exhibition said: “Diversified dialogues encourage the interactive exchange of ideas among designers, as well as enriching their creative fabric. Case studies from Germany and Finland provided Hong Kong and Shanghai designers with insightful experiences to learn from, the sharing also facilitated the participants to reconsider the relationship between designs and creation of better cities.”

“Hong Kong: Creative Ecologies” programme will move to Hong Kong Heritage Museum in February next year. Forums and educational workshops which are open to public will also be held. Details of the Hong Kong leg will be announced later.
