Lighting up Mid-autumn smiles

Director of local architectural consultancy, CL3, William Lim has created many award-winning projects such as China’s Vanke Chengdu Commercial Complex and Hong Kong Jockey Club’s vibrant Adrenaline Bar.

Uniting people of all ages and walks of life in a sense of shared wonder, the annual Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival remains amongst the best loved of all Hong Kong celebrations. In September 2003, the Hong Kong Tourist Board gave revelers a treat to remember by commissioning Lim to create the biggest lantern the Territory had ever seen. Inspired by bamboo scaffolding, Lim masterminded a magnificent suspended half-sphere design measuring fully 15 meters high by 35 meters wide. Inside was housed a state-of-the-art 360° projection system and a genuinely mind-boggling array of lights. Having amazed thousands of visitors, the structure went on to win eight prestigious international awards. Astonishingly, Lim and his team succeeded in getting the fully wind- and storm-proof structure up and running in just 12 days.
