Because one size rarely fits all
In his 25-year career, Hong Kong Poly U lecturer Roger Ball has designed best-selling sports products for Brine Lacrosse, Bell Helmets and Nike and taught studio design in North America, Asia and Europe.
It used to be that Asians had to settle for badly fitting head and eye wear designed for Western heads. Roger Ball’s ground-breaking SizeChina anthromorphic project has changed all that forever. The world’s first ever digital database of Chinese head and face sizes and shapes, SizeChina has enabled revolutionary developments in the design of numerous products for Asia’s increasingly lucrative markets. In all, Ball and his fellow researchers from Hong Kong Polytechnic University spent fully 16,000 man hours 3-D-scanning and analyzing some 2,000 people from six Chinese provinces. Revealing that Asian head length to width ratios are 1:0.86 compared to 1:0.74 for Westerners, SizeChina’s wealth of potential applications includes not only helmets, but also facemasks, goggles and even spectacles.
