Hong Kong has been a major force in martial arts action movies since the heady mid-1970s days of Bruce Lee. In bringing together leading figures such as star, Donnie Yen, director, Yip Wai-shun, and stunt co-ordinator, Sammo Hung, to create Ip Man, Wong and the Mandarin team have set new benchmarks in the field. Telling the epic story of ‘hand-talk’-style Wing Chung martial arts master, Ip Kai-man (1893 -1972) up to 1949, Ip Man has gone on to achieve huge critical and commercial acclaim. The 12 coveted local and international awards the 2008 film has received to date include “Best Film” and “Best Action Choreography” at the 28th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2009. A sequel telling the next chapter of Ip’s story has just been released.
