Saluting Hong Kong's 'can do' spirit
Co-founder of Hong Kong's highly successful GOD ("Live better" in Cantonese) locally-inspired lifestyle brand, Douglas Young continues to set the design direction for the company's best selling homeware products and accessories.
Rather than being fixed for all time by their architects, buildings in Hong Kong quickly become a riot of self-expression as tenants start adding elements to make their homes more comfortable and distinctive. Consequently, establishing which designs best characterize the Territory's indigenous architecture is a poser that local architects have been hotly debating for years. For Young, the answer clearly lies in Kowloon's legendary Walled City before its 1993 demolition. The only place in Hong Kong outside police jurisdiction, the area quickly became a criminal hotbed. That people were able to survive and even thrive in such shoddily built and poorly ventilated surroundings is, for Young, the story of Hong Kong itself encapsulated in architecture.
